CEBU - In a bid to empower small and medium businesses in Cebu with end-to-end IT solutions, HPS Software and Communication Corporation early this month conducted a showcase and seminar series on some of the latest IT products from Apple, Cisco, IBM/Lotus, Polycom and Sophos.

Stanley Yap, HPS managing director, said that this was part of a regular series that will be conducted throughout the year featuring products from the business partners of    Cebu-based companies. “We wanted to bring in something more cutting-edge this time,” he said. Between 150 to 200 people representing SMBs attended the afternoon event, a sign that more and more small to medium companies in Cebu are interested in automating or computerizing their systems.

Notable at the event was the growing support for Linux and Unix from the featured vendors. Apple’s xServe runs Mac OS 10.2, which is based on FreeBSD, while the IBM/Lotus products also run on Linux. Sophos also showcased a server-based anti-virus package that runs on Linux.

The five seminars lined up for the event went overtime as the presentors took turns revealing the hottest features of their products. The first on the list was “Protecting your Corporate Network with Sophos Anti-Virus” by Clarence Phua, Sophos business development manager for the Asia-Pacific region. The seminar focused on the company’s client- and server-based anti-virus products.

This was followed by “IBM/Lotus Messaging, Collaboration, and Mobile Solutions” where Ryan Manalastas, tech sales consultant for IBM/Lotus, presented Domino R6, positioning it as a superior solution to MS Exchange after citing stability and security issues. Iris Tan, also from IBM/Lotus, then showed off IBM Lotus Sametime, a real-time messaging application that can even be integrated with mobile phones.

Philip Tan of Cisco Philippines introduced the latest IP telephony features on Cisco router hardware as well as the company’s new IP phones in the “Cisco Network Infrastructure” seminar.

To liven things up a bit, Polycom representatives then conducted a live demonstration of their video conferencing solutions with Rene Villadolid, regional sales manager in Hong Kong, and Moses Lee in Singapore sending their presentations to Cebu.

Finally, Christopher Tan, Apple Philippines country manager, gave an overview of the features in Apple’s powerful new enterprise server, the xServe, and the company’s storage solution, the xRAID.
